He has worked in the field for over twenty-seven years, helping thousands of people affected by destructive cults. He is a Nationally Certified Counselor (NCC) and also a Licensed Mental Health Counselor (LMHC). He was also a leader in the Moon cult for over two years (in the 1970s).
Hassan is a knowledgeable and responsible media spokesperson. He has been an expert for Nightline, CNN, 60 Minutes, Dateline NBC and appeared on television and radio hundreds of times since 1976. Newspapers like the New York Times, Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, The Boston Globe and hundreds of other print media around the world have quoted him.
He has also authored two of the most respected books on the subject of cults. His first was Combatting Cult Mind Control: The #1 Guide to Protection, Rescue and Recovery from Destructive Cults (Park Street Press, 1988). This book is still in print and is published in 7 different languages.
In his latest, critically acclaimed book, Releasing the Bonds: Empowering People to Think for Themselves (FOM Press, 2000). Hassan has written the “state of the art” guide for mental health professionals, clergy, educators and any concerned citizen.
