[Aum Shinrikyo] Aum Shinrikyo is the Japanase cult responsible for the 1995 sarin attack on the Tokyo subway transportation system.
The cult’s founder, Shoko Asahara, born Chizuo Matsumoto, has been sentenced to death and is awaiting his execution in death row.
Shoko does not speak to anyone. Not to his lawyers who over 140 meetings have attempted to get Shoko to help them mount a defense — and not to his daughters Mayumi and Kaori Asahara. Daughters who grew up in their father’s cult and desperately need an answer to one question: Why?
“We were told: Do not kill and be kind to other people. Now we are told my father directed others to kill people, so there is a very big gap. I need to ask my father directly what happened.
Some Japanese media say you are the children of devils so you don’t have any rights. Whatever I do is all broadcast and most of it isn’t true. […] Rather than try to change our image, we just want them to forget about us.”
– Kaori Asahara
